This is the HSK 2.0 list. The exam changes to HSK 3.0 worldwide on 13 December 2026. See the HSK 3.0 level 5 word list and what changed in HSK 3.0.

What Is HSK 5?

The HSK (汉语水平考试 — Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is China's standardised Mandarin proficiency test for non-native speakers. HSK 5 is the fifth of six levels, adding 203 new words on top of the vocabulary you've already covered across HSK1 through HSK4.

At HSK 5 level you can understand long, complex texts, follow the gist of news broadcasts and unscripted conversation, and express yourself fluently on abstract subjects like economy, society, culture, and technology. It roughly corresponds to B2–C1 on the European CEFR scale.

The Grammar Jump from HSK4 to HSK5

HSK5 shifts from everyday spoken patterns toward the formal, written register used in news, essays, and academic speech. Here are three patterns you'll meet constantly:

之所以…是因为… (the reason … is because …)
他之所以成功,是因为他从不轻易放弃。
The reason he succeeded is because he never gives up easily.

无论…都… (no matter … , always …)
无论遇到什么困难,他都坚持完成任务。
No matter what difficulties he runs into, he always sticks with finishing the task.

一…就… (as soon as … , then …)
他一发现问题,就立刻联系了技术人员。
As soon as he discovered the problem, he immediately contacted a technician.

At this level the bigger shift is in register rather than vocabulary. HSK5 sentences link cause, contrast, and condition across long clauses using connectors like 因此, 尽管, 由于, and 从而, the kind of structure you'll meet in news commentary and formal writing rather than casual chat. Read each sentence twice: once for meaning, once to trace how the connectors hold the logic together.

Study Tips for HSK5

  1. Review HSK1–4 vocabulary first — HSK5 words lean heavily on the connectors and everyday nouns from earlier levels (因为/所以, 但是, 需要, 关于). If those aren't solid, revisit them before piling on 203 new abstract words.
  2. Read authentic material, not just word lists — At HSK5, meaning depends on context far more than at earlier levels: 具体 (jùtǐ), 明显 (míngxiǎn) and 清楚 (qīngchu) all touch "clear/specific" but aren't interchangeable. Read real news headlines, short-story excerpts, or opinion columns and notice how these words actually get used.
  3. Write characters to activate memory — Use HanziBook to generate a free practice copybook for any HSK5 character. Writing each stroke in order builds motor memory that flashcards alone can't match, especially for the denser, more abstract characters at this level.
